چکیده

The Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) was installed in the Hubble Space Telescope in February 1997. After twenty-two months of operation the 110 kg supply of solid N2, which cooled the NICMOS-3 HgCdTe detectors, was exhausted. The cryostat warmed up leaving the instrument in an electromechanically functional, but scientifically non-viable, passive state. Following a three year suspension of observations, an active cooling system featuring a reverse Brayton cycle micro-turbine was installed and integrated with NICMOS during HST servicing mission 3B. As a result the NICMOS detectors and cold optics have successfully been re-cooled to operationally effective temperatures and the science program has begun. We review the operating characteristics of the NICMOS instrument, its new cooling system, and its performance both in absolute terms and in comparison to its previous on-orbit incarnation. We discuss the scope and nature of the astronomical investigations that have been and are again enabled with NICMOS. Additionally, we present some of the first scientific results from programs executed with the re-cooled NICMOS.

NICMOS Coronagraphy: Recalibration and the NICMOS Legacy Archive PSF Library

NICMOS coronagraphy, with well-matched template Point Spread Function (PSF) subtraction, probes the closest environments of occulted targets with the highest imaging sensitivity in intrinsically high contrast fields at the smallest radial distances afforded, uniquely, by HST. NICMOS PSF-subtracted coronagraphy has been invoked in a wide variety of HST programs with science themes as divergent a...

Hst/nicmos Detection of Hr 8799 B in 1998

Three planets have been directly imaged around the young star HR 8799. The planets are 5–13 MJup and orbit the star at projected separations of 24–68 AU. While the initial detection occurred in 2007, two of the planets were recovered in a re-analysis of data obtained in 2004. Here we present a detection of the furthest planet of that system, HR 8799 b, in archival HST/NICMOS data from 1998. The...

DOMAINS OF OBSERVABILTY IN THE NEAR-INFRARED with HST/NICMOS and (ADAPTIVE OPTICS AUGMENTED) LARGE GROUND-BASED TELESCOPES

This report has been prepared at the request of STScI. It is intended to serve as a guide for HST proposers and TAC panel reviewers in evaluating the need for HST/NICMOS to accomplish the scientific goals of programs under consideration in specific observational domains. In the years since the first incarnation of NICMOS, ground-based technical capabilities in support of challenging astronomica...

NICMOS Focus and HST Breathing

The program 7608 monitored on a biweekly basis NICMOS camera foci from June 9, 1997, through February 18, 1998. Each of the biweekly observations included 17 measurements of focus position (focus sweeps), individually for each of the three cameras. The measurements for camera 1 and camera 3 foci covered one or two HST orbital periods. Comparison of these measurements with the predictions of the...

NICMOS Pointed Thermal Background: Results from On-Orbit data

This ISR presents the results of the analysis of NICMOS pointed thermal background data taken as part of the Servicing Mission Orbital Verification (SMOV). Observations in NICMOS Camera 3 are taken at different pointings and analysis of the data shows the HST thermal emission to be fairly stable. Furthermore, data obtained with multiple filters shows no significant differences with the backgrou...
